Misc (old) Windows Games FAQ

Soldier of Fortune

Q) Soldier of Fortune crashes with a Blue Screen Of Death in AU30WAVE.VXD.
Q) Soldier of Fortune crashes with an illegal operation in ref_gl.dll at the start of a new level.

A) This is due to the buggy A3D implementation in the game. In the game options, select Default sound rather than A3D. Some people claim to have fixed the crashes but none of the things they’ve mentioned work.

Q) The sound stutters quite a lot even though my machine meets the required specifications.
Q) Lots of sounds are missing or muted and I’ve got an Aureal Vortex 2 sound card.

A) Don’t select EAX in the game options. Also, in the Vortex Control Panel, set Reverb Engine/EAX Support to disabled because otherwise sound streams are limited to 8 (rather than 76!)

Q) I’ve got an NVidia Vanta, TNT, or TNT2 based video card and performance is choppy.

A) Do not select 32bit rendering for these cards (especially for 1024x768). Also, try different video card drivers. I get the best performance with the 3.77 and 6.31 drivers.

Q) I’ve installed the latest patch and now my saved games won’t load.

A) The latest patch (1.06) does this and it is normal. There are many changes to the game in this version including improved AI.

Tomb Raider Chronicles

Q) The game frequently drops me back to the desktop.

A) This is usually due to using older video card hardware (i.e. Matrox G100). Make sure that you have installed the latest video card driver. A friend of mine was never able to resolve this issue until he purchased a new nVidia GeForce 2MX. Most nVidia cards work fine because their drivers support all of the features required by the game.

Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit

Q) I’ve installed some new cars which I downloaded from the Internet and now the game crashes whenever I start it it.

A) There is a limit to the number of extra cars you can have installed. Remove the ones you don’t like most or get a car manager utility.

Midtown Madness

Q) After extended playing, the game becomes very jerky.

A) Older Nvidia drivers (pre-5.13) have issues with this game. Update to 5.13 or later.

Requiem: Avenging Angel

Q) The game complains that I need DirectX 6 or later. I’ve got DirectX 8.0 installed!

A) The original game and patched versions up to 1.2 can only detect DirectX versions up to version 7. Get the 1.3 patch for whichever mode you run the game in (Software, Direct3D or 3DFX) – note that you need to install the 1.2 patch first.

Driver

Q) I keep getting bumped back to the desktop.

A) Install the very latest patch (the loading indicator is green if you’ve got the latest). If the indicator on the loading screen is multi-coloured, then you have got the affected version. www.driverhq.com

The 7th Guest for DirectX

Q) I can’t hear any music.

A) The game uses MIDI for music so make sure that it is turned up in the Mixer. I haven’t been able to get in-game music with Windows 2000 at all.

Doom for DirectX

Q) I can’t hear any music.

A) If you’ve got an Aureal Vortex 2 card then you need to tick the “Disable Hardware Acceleration” checkbox in the Vortex Control Panel.
