If you bought your copy of Driver in the UK, then don’t install the patch called “DrvUSPatchv2.0_sd1.35.exe” since it will break certain parts of the game. It is intended for the US versions of the game only. If you install it, then the text will be messed up in the game and some of the bitmaps won’t be displayed.

The “Patch_Driver(Eng).exe” patch appears to be multi-lingual since there is no language file contained within it. However, from the name I would only recommend installing it on a UK version of Driver, and not on the US version. I cannot test this since I have only got the UK version of the game. Version 1.1 appears to fix problems with some of the missions, but it doesn’t seem to fix the problem where the game will drop back to the desktop in certain places (not on my TNT2 based system anyway).

The “38209_driv21e.zip” needs to be installed manually since it has no self-extractor. This appears to be for the UK version of the game, but again, it might work on the US release. This version DOES fix the drop to desktop bug and I highly recommend that you install it. US gamers might want to install the “DrvUSPatchv2.0_sd1.35.exe” patch as this also fixes it. Version 1.2 (a.k.a 2.0) and Version 1.3 (a.k.a 2.1) appear very similar and both add extra joystick/steering wheel options including combined Joystick/Keyboard controls. Version 1.3 fixes FMV problems (possibly the ATI Rage 128 problem mentioned in the original Readme file).

Q) Why is the game so choppy with my NVidia TNT2 based card?

A) Don't know, it works fine with the 3Dfx Voodoo 3 which is of similar power so it must be a compatibility problem between them. It does run fast enough however but not as fast as it should be, especially since it has pretty bad popup artefacts. IMHO that is the only thing that spoils this over-wise excellent game!

A) You may have set the frame rate limiter really low (i.e. less than 25fps). You can find it in graphics options in-game.

Q) I’ve got an Aureal Vortex 2 and the engine sounds are too quiet (Windows 95/98/Me)
Q) I’ve got an Aureal Vortex 2 and the engine sounds are just one repeating loop (Windows 2000)

A) Install the latest Aureal Vortex AU8830 drivers for your OS. That is 4.06.2048.21 for Win9x and 5.10.12.2559 for Win2K. Also, if you’re using Win9x then install the Aureal A3D Driver 3.12. Don’t install them in Win2K since it needs special drivers to interface with the WDM drivers. If all else fails, change the Options in the game to use Medium Performance for Sound.

Q) The game configuration complains about the lack of palletised textures support.

A) This should only occur in the Demo. It is not an issue with modern AGP cards since they have lots of video memory. 8-bit Palletised Textures are just what they say. They are a legacy texture format which used to be pretty much standard on old Direct3D cards (i.e. 4MB PCI) so that they could save memory. Most cards now can handle large 32-bit textures so don’t worry about it. The NVidia TNT2 cards will never support 8-bit Palletised Textures as it is a hardware feature.
